Roleplaying Chat Rooms – Background and Etiquette

A chat room is an interface that allows you to interact textually with other people in real time. Roleplaying is the act of assuming a character, and acting as that character in a free form environment while interacting with other people under other assumed characters in order to tell a story. The combination allows you to assume a characters role, in a textual environment. This is done in the following ways.In this type of interaction, the chat room becomes a kind of novel, that is written in real time. Each chatter has an identity, which can be backed up through a profile, blogs, or other media elements based on the capabilities of the site.The chat itself becomes a location, of sorts, which is agreed upon by everyone participating. Each person imagines their character in that location in different positions. It can at times be difficult to keep all of the relative positions straight, however after some practice it ends up being akin to reading a novel, where the picture unfolds in your mind naturally as actions take place.Interactions happen in two ways. Action marks can be used to indicate a character making a movement. Action marks can be any set of key strokes which do not look like text, and which can be wrapped around your words. The following are some examples of action marks, and actions that are used.::walks in::;;sits down;; *waves hello* ))smiles politely(( ==looks left==The choice of action marks used is unique to the individual with the only requirement being that they stand out from normal text.The other type of interaction is purely speech. In some cases this is indicated by putting quotes around words such as “I see you are looking rather humble today.” Other communities use normal test as speech, and reserve actions for action mark enclosed statements. The choice is up to both the individual and the roleplaying community.There actually is a third type of interaction in roleplaying chat rooms but it is generally frowned upon by those in the community. Out of Character, or OOC is a term used to describe interactions which do not come from the character being played, but instead come from the person playing the character in the real world. These are sometimes necessary to clarify an issue, however they are generally frowned upon because they tend to destroy the reality of the world being created. If OOC interactions are absolutely necessary, then most communities use the convention of enclosing the words in ( ) parenthesis, to indicate that this is not part of the normal flow of the story.Roleplaying chat rooms can be an engaging and vigorous way to indulge your creative side, while interacting with others. Since the medium is text, and therefore is based on imagination, there is almost no limit to adventures that you can experience through these games.
